IT'S A ONE WORD 2

We paused what we were doing to make sure we'd heard right, discussions suspended, the hustle and bustle of getting ready for a new lecture temporarily dismissed, notes and materials debarred from completing  their voyages from bags. She repeated herself "I say hope you are enjoyed your holidays". All doubt was cleared, the problem wasn't our auditory anatomy, it wasn't a chance gbaguan, it was deliberately conceived, packaged and delivered, standing before us was a master sheller, and we were about to be blown apart.

An excited murmur passed through the class as looks and words summarized to "did you hear that?!" were exchanged. People like me picked up their pens and recorded the new entry in a special dedicated notebook labeled "gbaguan inventory". After much ado and pleas for decorum from our distinguished professor of grammatical disconcord, the class quieted down and we continued...

My Book Story 1

me, aged 15, just fresh out of secondary school, single, seeking admission, going through changes, friends far away... This is a picture of me with the love of my life (then), I took this picture the way you'll take a picture with your spouse, your best friends, your new car, your priced awards or any other thing you love as I love my books.

STRUCK AGAIN

On ASUU strike, ending soon?

STRUCK AGAIN (by ASUU, the gods of thunder)

It struck again, that hideous thunder

It made us scamper

Pell-mell, helter-sketter

Back we fell, to our old folks' shelter

WEIGHTIER MATTERS

More things to life than the frivolous
More things to amaze and astound us

MISHAP

MISHAP
I woke up this morning late as usual, hurried straight to the kitchen as usual (stop thinking that, I brushed first)  to make breakfast. I woke up hungry, also as usual, probably because of the late night snack I had last night, still as usual. It's said that eating late at night 'll make you super hungry the following morning. It could also possibly be because I hardly slept, I was awake all night, causing trouble on twitter, gossiping with peeps on BBM and Whatsapp, uploading, tagging and commenting on pictures on Facebook, setting that P through night call and of course, creatively writing. Now you know why I woke up late, guess I come alive in the night time, but you don't know what my eyes beheld in the kitchen, it was unusual.

FALLING AND RISING

Falling and Rising

*We don't rise to fall, but we fall to rise.*

Falling, a dwindling twinkle star
Fading into nothingness,
The void from which I came
Lost in the emptiness
Of an expansive milky way
At least I shone tonight

LIT LEGENDS 1: WILLIAMS SHAKESPEARE

William Shakespeare
How much do you know about the legend, Williams Shakespeare?
What you wouldn't know about Williams Shakespeare and only I would tell you is that, he influenced my writing and much of my speech. I remember reading TWELFTH NIGHT OR WHAT YOU WILL at age nine. Not the summarized one that many of you would have read, but the original version written by him in the " eth, thee, thy, ere, whereof" language of the Renaissance Period in which he lived. It was a difficult book to read, even my mum who owned it, probably didn't enjoy it, but had to read it to get her degree. Anyway, I read it, start to finish, appendices as well, and was fascinated by the poetry, style and the speeches, like the duke's line in the first act, "if music be the food of love, play on..." A poem, or was it a

REASONS to REASON

By OKAFOR ARINZE

Reasons to Reason
in the midst of war, atmosphere of hate.
hearts yearning for revenge, victims of fate.
angry minds, indignant hearts.
saddened nation, scattered parts.
there seems to be no reason to love.

Their Crime?

Just this week, I read in horror about the gruesome murder of a final year student in Badagry, Lagos- very close to where I live. It's still fresh on our minds, the incident that occurred last year involving the ALUU four, just like the ALUU boys, the student who was brutally murdered with his friend had done nothing wrong. At least that was what I understood from the facts. What is wrong? What is our crime? Why are we students murdered at will, at the slightest provocation? I wrote this poem in a very emotional state, my heart bleeds for them still.

Shedding some light on KHONA

LYRICS OF KHONA by MAFIKIZOLO featuring UHURU, AND ITS LITERARY MEANING - A NIGERIAN'S PERSPECTIVE by Prince Adewale Oreshade

The first phenomenon one has to address in this song is the Language. The song was written and sung in the Zulu Language. And in some part of the song; it did flirt with other local Languages. Some Zulus from a province called Mpumalanga are influenced by an inland country called Swaziland, so they tend to mix their vowels. It has a feel of English too - Rose and Mama. But then, Mama is one of those words that its meaning is universal. Mama means Mother in almost all languages. And Zulu is not an exception.

To understand this song - Khona, one has to understand the personal lives of the members of the Mafikizolo Band, and Uhuru also. The members of Mafikizolo are Theo Kgosinkwe, Nhlanhla Nciza, and Tebogo Madingoane. And the genre of music this group make is called Kwaito. Their kind of song can be called Afro-Pop. It has a peculiar Angolian-Swahili feel too. Quite eccentric, at least, to we non-South Africans.

Khona is one of the tracks in their February (2013) released album titled Reunited. Being their first album since they went solo in 2008. From the lyrics of the song one will see that Reunited is not just the persons reuniting but a unification of their experiences in sonorous-lines. Khona is a sample of one of the tracks that unites their sad experiences.

Before one goes into their personal experiences, it is pertinent to understand or have an idea what Khona means. Khona means 'there' or 'at that place'. So the song is more of a dialogue-type song. So for every persons mentioned in the song; Khona is a rhetorical call to them to 'come back. So all of them that are 'there', at that 'other side' or 'that place' should come back. Its kind of a sad plea. Khona being an euphemism for death's hades and cracks of a broken heart. Even Theo's dance of throwing his arms and thighs in the forward and then backward direction portrays the come-back-Khona message.

So the question arises, who are these people the Mafikizolo sang this song for? One of the Trio of Mafikizolo is Tebogo Madingoane. Amidst the peak of their success in 2004, on the 14th of February to be precise; Tebogo, one of the male singers was shot after an argument got heated with another driver in traffic. His death touched the spines of the Mafikizolo and it has always been in their hearts since then.

Prudence vs Paranoia

PRUDENCE and PARANOIA

AT THE TUNNELS END
